Types of Facial Dark Spots:

• Superficial Freckles (“Ephelides”):
  These are small, light brown spots about 1 mm in size, commonly found in individuals with fair skin. They typically appear on the cheeks and nose and can spread across the face, arms, neck, and chest, or areas not covered by clothing. Superficial freckles are easy to treat but can recur easily as they are caused by prolonged sun exposure that stimulates pigment production in the affected area.
• Dermal pigmentation (Nevus of Ota and Nevus of Hori):
  Unlike superficial freckles, these are small, greyish-black spots with indistinct borders, differing from melasma in that melasma appears as patch and brownish in colour. These dermal pigmentation are commonly found on the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, and around the temples. Nevus of Ota differs from Nevus of Hori in that it can also appear on normal skin and mucous membranes, such as the white of the eye or the palate. The exact cause of dermal pigmentation (Nevus of Ota and Nevus of Hori) is unknown, but they are believed to be naturally occurring, related to genetics, and become more apparent in adulthood. They can be present from birth or develop in adulthood.
